Kalavati, a Kanpur-based crusader against open defecation, was among the seven women achievers to tweet their life journeys from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter handle after the PM signed off on International Women’s Day as he had earlier announced.

Kalavati’s name instantly evoked memories of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's famous June 2018 speech, where he spoke of a Vidarbha widow Kalavati to drive home the UPA’s point about the merits of the Indo-US nuclear deal. Kalavati today spoke of a story about ridding her neighbourhood of open defecation by initiating house-to-house fund collection to build a toilet.
