Aug 5, 2025: Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness.
Malik, 79, passed away on Tuesday afternoon after being admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi.
In August 2018, Malik was named Governor of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir; his term will end in 2019. The central government ended Article 370 and the special status of Jammu and Kashmir during his tenure.
In September 2017, Malik was first given the position of Governor of Bihar, after which he was moved to Jammu and Kashmir. In 2019, he was transferred to Goa and then to Meghalaya.
He entered politics in 1965, inspired by Rammanohar Lohia's socialist philosophy. He was appointed the Bharatiya Kranti Dal's Chief Whip in the Assembly after being elected as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1974. He ran for office in the Baghpat Assembly Constituency.
