Aug 5, 2025: Amit Shah broke the previous record held by senior BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani by becoming India's Union Home Minister on Tuesday. Since taking office on May 30, 2019, Shah has served for a total of 2,258 days, or approximately 6 years and 68 days. He achieved this milestone on August 5, the same date he had announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament in 2019, ending Jammu and Kashmir's special status, according to news agency.
Before Shah, the longest tenures as home minister were held by Congress leader Govind Ballabh Pant and BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani.
Govind Ballabh Pant held this position for six years and 56 days, from January 10, 1955, to March 7, 1961, and Advani held it for 2,256 days, from March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004. From May 30, 2019, to June 9, 2024, Shah was home minister. On June 10, 2024, he was reappointed, keeping the position. He also has the distinction of having been the nation's first cooperation minister. Earlier, he also served as the home minister of Gujarat and held the position of BJP National President.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Shah on becoming India's longest-serving home minister at a recent NDA meeting. Shah was praised for his contributions. India's internal security has undergone significant transformations during Amit Shah's tenure as home minister under PM Modi's leadership.
