Prayers were offered at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar’s old city on Wednesday after a hiatus of nearly 136 days that began on August 5 when the mosque was put under a siege and prayers were disallowed.
The midday prayers were offered at Kashmir valley’s largest mosque while the attendance was limited to a single row, eye-witnesses said. The mosque is the largest in Kashmir valley and had remained under strict lockdown from August 5 till mid-November.
While the administration had removed restrictions from offering prayers at Jamia Masjid in mid-November, the mosque’s administration had refused to offer prayers and set forth a series of demands that included removal of paramilitary personnel from the vicinity of Jamia Masjid.
