July 1, 2025: Recalling the film’s enduring charm, Minister Puri posted on X: “Delighted to revisit the aura and grandeur of a bygone era at the premiere of the remastered version of the iconic Umrao Jaan, re-released in cinemas with the legendary filmmaker Muzaffar Ali Ji and several other friends and dignitaries. This celluloid jewel is a must-watch for aficionados of period tales and culture, students of cinema and cinegoers of every generation.”
Describing the film as “a prayer wrapped in a ghazal”, Puri praised its unmatched portrayal of tehzeeb, poetry and artistry. He lauded Rekha’s memorable performance in the titular role, along with Shahryar’s lyrical poetry, Khayyam’s haunting music and Asha Bhonsle’s soulful renditions.
The film, which won four National Awards, is about a poet and tawaif in Lucknow in the 19th century. Rekha’s nuanced portrayal of Umrao Jaan has long been considered one of her finest performances, cementing the film’s legacy as a cinematic masterpiece.
The Ministry of Culture, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) are collaborating on a larger project to preserve and revive Indian cinematic heritage for present and future audiences. The restoration project is a component of this larger endeavor. Directed by Muzaffar Ali and produced by SK Jain & Sons in collaboration with Integrated Films, Umrao Jaan is now back on the silver screen from June 27, offering a rare opportunity for audiences to experience the film’s grandeur in a new digital avatar.
