Aug 4, 2025: The Supreme Court remarked on Monday, slamming Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his alleged derogatory remarks about the Indian Army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra, "If you are a true Indian, you would not say such a thing." However, the matter was put on hold while Gandhi appeared before a Lucknow court by the top court.
The Uttar Pradesh Government and the complainant in the case were served notice by a bench composed of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih. "You are the opposition's leader. If you say something in Parliament, why not on social media? The Bench made the observation, "How do you get to know that 2000 square kilometers land was occupied by Chinese? If you are true Indian, you wouldn't say such a thing."
Gandhi's plea was denied on May 29 by the Allahabad High Court. Gandhi had argued that the complaint and summoning order were maliciously filed and were motivated by Gandhi. Complainant Udai Shanker Srivastava claimed in his plea that Gandhi made a number of disparaging remarks about the Indian Army during the December 2022 Yatra in the context of the border standoff with China.
