Aug 6, 2025: Shubman Gill is likely to make a comeback in the T20Is when Team India returns to action at the Asia Cup next month.
Shubman Gill is set for a T20I comeback as India prepare to pick their squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, likely to be finalised in the third week of August. Gill has been absent from India's T20I setup for a considerable period, having also missed a chance to lift the T20 World Cup title last year. After the tournament, his last appearance was in a bilateral series against Sri Lanka. Since then, he has missed three T20I series: the high-profile five-match series against England, the home series against Bangladesh, and the away series against South Africa. After the exhausting England Tests, Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are expected to return to the T20I lineup, according to sources, after a rare five-week break. Even though Jaiswal is a regular in T20Is, the selectors are said to be keeping the door open for a strong core, especially since the continental tournament only has six matches over 21 days. Jaiswal has also been absent from the T20I team recently due to commitments in ODIs and Tests.

If India makes it to the final, it will take place on September 28. The home Test series against the West Indies will start on October 2. During the league phase, Jaiswal, who scored 559 runs at a strike rate of 160, and Gill, who scored 650 runs at a strike rate of over 155, were key performers.
Joining them in the conversation is Gill’s Gujarat Titans teammate, Sai Sudharsan, who won the Orange Cap with 759 runs at 156, his strongest T20 showing yet. The selectors have been keeping a close eye on Sudharsan since he made his ODI debut late last year. The trio of Gill, Jaiswal, and Sudharsan faces strong competition from in-form names like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who have also been regulars in the format, with the Asia Cup being held in the UAE and the T20 World Cup only six months away. The selectors will have to make some close calls due to the limit of 17 members.
The availability of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, both of whom are expected to undergo fitness tests before the team is selected, will be another important factor. As part of his workload management, Siraj participated in all five Tests of the series against England, which came to an end earlier this week. Bumrah participated in three. However, the selectors must make precise decisions regarding the bowling department for the continental tournament because the home series against West Indies begins just three days after the Asia Cup Final.
