Aug 7, 2025: On Wednesday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that he had written to national parties with a significant presence in Parliament to ask for their support for the introduction of a bill in the Monsoon session to restore Jammu and Kashmir's statehood.
According to Abdullah, who spoke to reporters in Srinagar today, "I have written a letter to all those parties that have a good number of MPs in Parliament and requested them to help us on the promise made to Jammu and Kashmir on statehood and raise the issue in Parliament so that a bill is brought in this session itself and Jammu and Kashmir gets its statehood back."
Omar stated that "it is about the promise made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir" rather than any one individual, political party, or government. The promise was made during public gatherings, including in Parliament and the Supreme Court. He stated, "Now we want the promise to be kept." Abdullah described the likelihood that the Supreme Court will hear a request for statehood restoration on August 8 as positive. "I hope the Supreme Court remembers that when they ruled on the August 5 case (in December 2023), they said that the statehood should be restored as soon as possible," "It is a good thing." He stated, "Now, many years have passed but we have not yet got it." He stated, "perhaps I would not have been talking to you as the chief minister today" if the Supreme Court had not established a deadline for holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The elections were held within the allotted time frame because the Supreme Court had established a deadline. We want that much time has passed, and if it doesn't come through the government (restoration of statehood), it should come through the court,” he said. In recent times, political parties in J&K, barring the BJP, have been demanding that statehood be restored soon.
Major political parties also demanded the restoration of statehood on Tuesday, the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, stating that "democracy should be visible in Kashmir like in the rest of the country." The former state of Jammu and Kashmir's special status was revoked on August 5, 2019, and the region was divided into two Union Territories—J&K and Ladakh.
