Aug 10, 2025: This week, Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra conducted the first-ever interstate trade under the National Agriculture Market (eNAM). The arrival of a truck carrying 11 metric tons of apples and pears from the Kashmir valley at the Gultekdi APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) in Pune marked a turning point in the digital platform's integration of agricultural mandis across states. The Indian government launched the eNAM platform with the intention of connecting all APMCs in the country to establish a single national market for agricultural products. Maharashtra has been one of the early adopters of this digital transition.
Vinayak Kokare, a joint director at the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board, stated, "We have associated 133 APMCs of Maharashtra under the eNAM scheme of the Government of India." "We appeal to the APMC traders to do maximum trading under eNAM," Kokare emphasized the scheme's broader goal. This will assure good price discovery, assurance of quality, the trading and transaction will all be transparent.”
Suyog Zende, an apple merchant who participated in this historic transaction, referred to eNAM as a game-changer for traders and farmers alike. This is PM Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's dream undertaking. This trade ought to continue, and it takes place online. This will provide farmers with government-verified merchants from across India, and it will do so transparently, Zende explained. Additionally, he noted that traders stand to gain from the system: "The merchants will also benefit from it as it will save time and money on travel." Farmers and traders from far-flung regions can now get around traditional barriers, middlemen, and inefficiencies thanks to the digital mechanism of eNAM. India's agri-tech infrastructure is maturing, as evidenced by the recent trade between J&K and Maharashtra, which reflects a larger shift in how agri-markets operate in the country. The government's push for transparent, fair, and efficient agri-markets appears to be gaining traction as more APMCs join the system and stakeholders recognize its benefits.
