
Aug 26, 2025: Moderate to heavy rains lashed Jammu division for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, leading to suspension of traffic along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, officials said.
They stated that nearly all rivers and streams are flowing above or close to the danger level, submerging numerous low-lying areas and roads in the city and elsewhere. The officials said the traffic on the 250-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway was suspended as a precautionary measure this morning following shooting of stones from the hillocks at Chanderkote, Kela Morh and Battery Cheshma in Ramban district.
They said that at Udhampur in Jammu and Qazigund in Kashmir, the only all-weather road that connects Kashmir to the rest of the country, vehicular traffic was stopped. Additionally, it was raining heavily all along the highway when the last reports were received.
According to the authorities, landslides at Konga and Thathri resulted in the closure of Ramnagar-Udhampur road in Udhampur and Jangalwar-Thathri road in Doda, respectively. In the Kishtwar district, a portion of the Padder road near Traith Nallah was washed away. From higher reaches of the Kishtwar, Doda, and Rajouri districts, damage to nearly a dozen houses and a cowshed was also reported.
According to the officials, the Modhopur barrage is overflowing and rising at a rate of one lakh cusec, causing heavy flooding in several low-lying areas along the Ravi river in the Kathua district. The officials stated that the water levels in the Taranah River, Ujh River, Maggar Khad, Sahar Khad, Ravi River, and their tributaries in Kathua are simultaneously rising and getting closer to the danger mark.
The officials also stated that the Tawi river has crossed the danger mark of 20 feet in the Udhampur district, and that the Chenab river is also flowing close to the warning level in Jammu. They stated that the Basanter River in Samba also crossed the danger threshold of 4.5 feet this morning. Kathua district saw the most precipitation in the last 24 hours, at 155.6 millimeters, according to the meteorological department. Bhaderwah in Doda came in second with 99.8 millimeters, followed by Jammu (81.5 millimeters) and Katra (68.8 millimeters).
During the forecast for moderate to heavy rainfall in many places in the Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, and Kishtwar districts with the possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in high altitude areas until August 27, authorities have already issued advisories advising people to stay away from water bodies and landslide-prone areas.
